Personal Development

Creative Course One

For my first creative course, I chose to complete an online course from Wendy Fessler, a graphic designer and art director. This course was about designing a book cover, teaching me the fundamental graphic design principles to consider when designing a book cover and presenting me the opportunity to design one. Following the completion of several video lessons, I was challenged to create a book cover for a Spanish language book, the necessary images were provided by the course. I wanted to complete this graphic design course as I believe I have a lack of skill and knowledge of graphic design, and I wanted to change that. I wish to further myself as a designer and be able to complete a wider variety of work, hence why this course appealed to me.

The key areas the video lessons/tutorials focused on were symmetry, scale and framing – gaining confidence in these areas are the key to designing a successful book cover. As my background is in Illustration, these were areas I had seldom considered before completing this course and I subsequently learned a lot about them. I believe I successfully considered these areas in designing my book cover and have a much higher level of knowledge and confidence in these areas. Overall, I am pleased I completed this course and believe the knowledge I have gained will be useful in other work I complete on this course, particularly this broadsheet design.Consideration of symmetry, scale and framing are extremely important in designing a visually effective broadsheet, and I am keeping these principles in the forefront of my mind when designing this broadsheet.

Creative Course Two

For my second creative course, I chose to complete an online course from Tamari Chabukiani, a designer. This course was an introductory course into graphic design and the basic principles of graphic design - contrast, repetition, tension, hierarchy, balance, white space, and scale. It is imperative for me to fully understand all these principles and how to apply them to my work, to improve my graphic design. However, I found that contrast and tension were the principles that I was most intrigued by and believe they are the most interesting and dynamic way to create a compelling graphic design. Furthermore, Chabukiani went over each principle in detail and showed how other designers have effectively utilised and mastered these principles to create effective designs. It was interesting and useful for me to see good design broken down and analysed, explaining what choices were made that results in the design working. Why a design is effective.

I chose to complete this specific course as I have a great deal of intrigue with graphic design, however I do not have much knowledge or experience in this discipline. I wish to gain knowledge in this area, hence why I thought it was useful for me to learn about the basic principles and gain an introduction into graphic design. A useful starting point. After the completion of this course, I now possess sufficient knowledge on the key principles and building blocks of good graphic design and now feel more confident going forward, completing graphic design work. The skills and knowledge I have gained from this course will be particularly useful in the completion of my broadsheet design for my Industry and Enterprise module. I will now use the key principles of graphic design as constant guidelines and areas to consider when designing the broadsheet, hopefully elevating and improving the design!
